Court Cases

In court cases for five decades, the R.I. ACLU has vigorously fought to protect the right to privacy, including medical and sexual privacy.

Uncle Sam at the LibraryLegislation

During the 2012 session, the Rhode Island ACLU successfully fought against a proposal to install cameras on police cruisers to continuously scan every license plate on the street.

In 2011, the Affiliate was hard at work on numerous privacy-related bills, including the passage of ACLU legislation to clarify existing law about screening newborns for illnesses.

For the 2010 session, the ACLU sponsored several bills to protect privacy, including privacy from red-light cameras and political surveillance, and the privacy of social security numbers and the medical screenings of newborns.
